Review: Black Mass on 4k UHD
Black Mass starring Johnny Depp finally received its 4k UHD physical media release and we're here to unpackage it.
The long awaited release of Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass on 4k UHD is over. Warner Bros. has been hopping on the 4k UHD trail lately in releasing various titles of its massive catalogue onto the 4k UHD format. This is the ultimate format for true home movie finatics!
With this 4k UHD release of Black Mass we get a delightful 4k Transfer in Dolby Vision/HDR. Black Mass was originally shot on 35mm film using Arriflex 235 Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL2, Panavision E-, G-Series, ATZ and Angenieux HR Lenses according to IMDb.
The film was originally finished as a 2k digital intermediate.
With this new 4k transfer the film looks absolutely stunning. This film is mafia-themed and obviously is darker toned. The Dolby Vision and HDR helps enhances brightness in the darker scenes and brings out the backgrounds more and overall is more visually appealing than its Blu-ray release.
Also, with this release come a crisp DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround audio track.
Now, here is what I thought was extra cool about this release - there’s some special features as listed below, but the near one-hour documentary about finding Whitey Bulger was very entertaining to watch and gave first-hand perspective on how this all came to be and how Whitey was found. A very informative and juicy extra add!
